Light ElementsIn August 2006, the public was invited to the public consultations showcasing the short listed designs for a new interactive lighting artwork for the St Peter’s and Maidstone Bridges. Light Elements is the creation of artist Peter Freeman and uses low wattage LED lighting and mobile telephone technology to allow people to change the colour of the lighting scheme by simply texting different commands based on the Elemental theme.
Light Elements was officially launched by the Deputy Mayor on Sunday 3 December 2006. The day's events included Light Fantastic, a family arts workshop provided by community arts organisation RedRaf Arts from The Exchange and a riverside lantern parade led by Maidstone samba band 'Bloco Fogo'.
Light Elements is a permanent commission, which responds to the Elemental 'elements of nature' theme and is visible daily between dusk until dawn. To see the bridge lighting colour and patterns change before your very eyes simply text one of the following words to 07775 864 202: Earth, Wood, Fire, Water, Metal, Elemental.
Light Elements is funded by the Channel Corridor Partnership and LAGBI.
The Light Fantastic workshop and parade was funded by the Channel Corridor Partnership and Kent County Council.
