Light + Water + Reflections: Light and Water are essential to life both physically and spiritually. Where they mix and interact it becomes possible to appreciate the beauty of the universe in the intricate complexity of colour and reflected patterns of light on water.
Artificial light complements the daylight creating a sense of wonder and excitement for the night landscape of the city.
Bridges: The River Medway and the bridges are the hub of Maidstone's history.
The inspiration for Light Elements came from the proximity of the two bridges and how they form a circle of traffic movement around a basin oasis of calm with anglers and pedestrians on the riverbanks in between.
My aim was to create a light installation that would be informed by the structure of the bridges and visually connect the two bridges, creating a dialogue between the bridges and the space between them using reflections and animated light.
Elements: Bridges, water, light, people and the traffic create a space full of contemporary life and symbolism.
Text commands give dynamic interactivity to the installation creating beautiful, coloured, animated reflections.
I have used the elements to explore ideas that contrast our contemporary materialistic view of the world by linking the work to a deeper emotional and symbolic relationship that exists between people and the environment.
