As part of the Elemental, this landmark commission brings contemporary public art to the riverside.

In March 2006, the Borough Council organised two public consultations at the Council’s London House offices and the Town Hall showcasing the short listed designs for a new artwork at St Peter's Street riverside. There was a positive response from the public to bring a contemporary, new artwork to the site as part of Elemental.

The consultations provided the public with the opportunity to formally nominate their favourite artwork. As a result, the artist Rob Olins was selected by the public with his design for The Maidstone Marker. The artwork is an 18.5 metre high steel, three dimensional structure, which incorporates an interactive lighting scheme that measures wind speed. In response to the Elemental theme, The Maidstone Marker artwork uses the element metal (one of five elements of nature).

The Maidstone Marker is the fourth artwork created within the Elemental walk and brings a high quality, unique and distinctive focal point to the town and riverside.  Its interactive lighting scheme creates an ever-changing visual effect, which can be experienced by passing motorists and pedestrians at all times of day. As part of the commission, Rob Olins delivered an education programme with Foundation Year students from the University College for the Creative Arts.

The Maidstone Marker is funded by the Channel Corridor Partnership.
