Morning Thoughts is the third permanent artwork commissioned as part of the Elemental public art project. The artwork is the creation of London-based sculptor Ekkehard Altenburger and is carved from Portuguese marble with a resin coating feature.
As part of the Education Programme for the Rose Garden Commission, the artist Ekkehard Altenburger worked with the Kent Association for the Blind to deliver Night Flight, a series of marble carving workshops, exhibited at All Saints Church, Maidstone.
“Production of Sculpture is all about 3 dimensional problem solving, first, the object itself, but also the physical placing of it. Here I see very close parallels with the problems blind people have to deal with on a daily basis; it is their experience of how to operate in a 3 dimensional space (without the help of vision) and how they experience objects in their daily life. The production of sculpture can greatly improve ones ability to understand 3 dimensional space, but also reading of texture and surfaces come into the process.”
